What is TLC for Kids?
TLC for Kids is a program that is currently being run for children registered at Tiny Tim Developmental School during the regular daycare hours. The program is for all children who are aged two and a half to six years old. It is a regular part of each child's week if parents agree to the program.
How is TLC for Kids funded?
TLC for Kids is a 12 week program that runs once a week. The cost for the program is $100.00 per child. Cheque can be submitted payable to Tiny Tim which will be included with your child care tax receipt. However, if you have extended health care benefits, the cheque can be made out to the Halton Hills Speech Centre for reimbursement.
Who makes TLC for Kids happen?
There are several agencies and people in the community who work with the staff at Tiny Tim Developmental School to make TLC for Kids possible and they include Halton Hills Speech Centre, the literacy specialist from the Early Years Centre in Milton, and Community Living North Halton.
What do the children do at TLC for Kids?
The children are screened and assigned to groups according to their age, ability and classroom groupings. Once a week the children will attend the program and work for about 30 minutes with their classroom teacher, a speech pathologist and a communicative disorders assistant on developing their literacy and language skills. This is done through interactive computer programs, games, songs and social interactions with their friends.
How can parents/caregivers/teachers help?
Each month that a child participates in TLC for Kids, they receive a one-page summary of the program's goals and activities from that previous month. The summary includes suggestions so that parents/caregivers can work at home to further enhance the skills that are being worked on at TLC for kids. A newsletter is available monthly (at the sign-in desk) full of ideas and information for parents/caregivers. As well, there are workshops scheduled several times per year where parents/caregivers can attend and learn more about social communication and literacy skills.
The teachers at Tiny Tim will also meet several times a year with a resource consultant from Community Living North Halton to talk about how to further implement the communication/literacy strategies and curriculum from TLC for Kids in their regular classroom curriculum.
Parents, caregivers will be offered the opportunity to visit the TLC for Kids program to observe what goes on in the small groups.
